Petroamazonas Ecuador S.A., a unit of Ecuadoran state oil company Petroecuador, is engaged in the exploration and development of oil reserves. It is also involved in strategic activities to develop the hydrocarbon business. The company operates 20 blocks – 17 in Ecuador's Oriente basin and three onshore. It also has 83 production fields, concentrating its activities in the Amazon basin. Petroamazonas was created in 2008 to operate the oil fields formerly owned by Occidental Petroleum Co. The fields were seized in May 2006 after various disputes with the California-based company. Additionally, Petroamazonas operates fields formerly run by Anglo-French company Perenco Corp. and by Brazilian oil company Petroleo Brasileiro SA, and also operates the Panacocha oil field.
